My interpretation of a very young woman
raising her children in the hood.
Unfortunately, we all know someone like this.
Her partner is either dead, in jail or just gone
away and left her to raise her children Alone.
Ruth Sidel, a professor of sociology at Hunter College of
New York and author of the book,
“Unsung Heroines:
Single Mothers and the American Dream, said another reason
is that more men are leaving now than they have in the past.
“To me, that was astonishing, how quickly and easily so many
of the men walk away,” she said. Two major factors that lead
to single motherhood are age and maturity
“We were way too young,” she said. “I mean, I was 15 when
I was pregnant. I think age definitely can play a part.”

The Bracero Program
(derived from the Spanish term bracero, meaning "strong-arm") was a series of laws and diplomatic agreements, initiated on August 4, 1942 exchange of diplomatic notes between the United States and Mexico, for the importation of temporary contract laborers from Mexico to the United States. American president Franklin D. Roosevelt met with Mexico's president Manuel Ávila Camacho in Monterrey, Mexico to discuss Mexico supplying laborers to the United States that were guaranteed basic human rights (sanitation, adecuate shelter and food) and a pay of .30cents an hour. All during early phases of World War II and the Bracero Program was born. After the expiration of the initial agreement in 1947, the program was continued in agriculture under a variety of laws and administrative agreements until its formal end in 1964. ( Wikipedia )

When the Spanish conquistador Hernan de Cortes and his army arrived in Tenochtitlan (ten-ohch-teet-LAHN), capital of the mighty Aztec empire, they were amazed by what they saw. The island city was built in the middle of Lake Texcoco, connected to the surrounding land by three great causeways. Stone aqueducts delivered fresh water to the city residents. A network of canals made up the city streets, and farmers grew vegetables on ingeniously constructed “floating gardens” (chinampas). There were palaces, parks, ball courts, a zoo, a bustling market, and an awe-inspiring temple complex. Tenochtitlan was the hub of a rich civilization that dominated the region of modern-day Mexico at the time the Spanish forces arrived. In this lesson, students will learn about the history and culture of the Aztecs and discover why their civilization came to an abrupt end. ( wikipedia )

``The Chicago Police Department can do its job and arrest people who break the law, but the gang problem won`t be solved until the community gets involved,`` he said.
On Friday night, about 20 people, including Chicago Mothers Against Gangs founder Francis Sandoval, braved frigid winds to attend a candlelight vigil, the first function Loeb has organized. It was held in McCarty Park, where two men have been shot in the last 14 months.Despite the relatively low turnout, Loeb`s determination did not flag.``I`m just going to keep on going,`` she said. ``If I can reach three of four
people here tonight, I`ve accomplished something.``

If Chicago’s current homicide rate continues over the last two months of this year, the city would experience almost 1.5 youth homicides per 100,000 residents in 2009, clutching the dubious distinction for the fourth year in a row.
“Chicago has become the ground zero for youth violence,” said Phillip Jackson, executive director of the Chicago-based Black Star Project, which specializes in mentoring low-income black and Latino youths at risk of committing or being victimized by violence. “Children in Chicago have the mentality of children who live in legitimate war zones. They can’t even concentrate on academics, on being children.”

Sex and Religion
acrylic on canvas
24" x 36"
$1300.
In the US, many religious leaders are against sex education in schools and insist that parents and churches should be primarily responsible. Results of this survey show parents, whether religious or not, are not particularly good at talking to their children. More secular parents do talk to their children 38% of the time to a mere 13% of religious parents. People from religious homes felt that their education in sex was poor compared to those from less religious homes.
